Language profile

This is our family language profile:

Dad: native Russian speaker, speaks fluent English, understands French. (Also speaks a bit of Polish)
Mum (me!): bilingual English and French since childhood, speaks fluent (but imperfect) Russian. (Also has a rusty grasp of German, and basic holiday Spanish)

We speak Russian and English to each other.

Dragonfly speaks, in order of fluency:
1. English - pretty much as a monolingual English speaking child - perhaps her vocabulary would be a bit bigger if she only spoke one language? Reads and writes well (English school).
2. French - fluent but with slight anglicisms on occasion. Reading level is around 1 year behind English reading level. Writing (and in particular spelling) is 1-2 years behind English writing level.
3. Russian - fluent, but accented and vocabulary is smaller than in the other languages which hinders communication. Reading and writing are probably a good 2 years behind English level.

Bee's languages are in the same order as Dragonfly's but it's harder to tell about reading and writing as these are developing. Bee reads well (for his age) in English and a little in French and Russian.

Dragonfly and Bee mainly speak English to each other.

Butterfly is just at the blowing raspberries stage. She is currently exposed to more French (from me and often siblings) than the other languages, and roughly equal amounts of English (from friends/ environment/ siblings) and Russian (from dad/ grandma).
